Fieldwick Farmhouse

Contemporary-Classic Farmhouse, Chilterns

416 sqm / 4,478 sqft

Our clients were moving back into their farmhouse property after renting it for many years and wanted to refurbish it as well as extend it to accommodate their two children’s families for holiday visits. Our brief was to modernise the house and connect the interiors with the expansive farm landscape beyond and to create a joyful family home that works for all three generations.

A Grown-up Retreat

The reception room was conceived as an adult sanctuary. It’s a space to relax, entertain and read. The centerpiece of the room is a stunning moonrock quartz fireplace surround, custom carved with fluted grooves adding a sculptural element that anchors the space. The sleek built-in bar with its copper mirror splashback offers a sophisticated spot to mix a cocktail.

The Heart of the Home

The kitchen is more than just a place to cook - it’s the vibrant heart of the home. Our clients wanted a space that was both practical and stylish that blends seamlessly into the surrounding space - we chose minimal, handleless cabinetry and added a striking feature - the bespoke liquid metal coated extractor box which adds a touch of luxury. The dining table with its live-edge wooden top is a slice of nature, bringing warmth into the space. The chandelier is by Marc Wood Studio.

A Cinematic Escape

Tucked away to the side of the house is a magical enclave designed for the grandchildren. The room is equipped with custom-built joinery, providing ample space for an array of toys and games as well as a generously sized TV for movie marathons. The corner sofa was custom-made as a sofa bed, perfect for sleepovers. The colour palette of blue-greens is offset with bright pops of burnt orange and caramel accents, adding a touch of warmth.

The original staircase was removed and the entrance hallway completely reconfigured to allow for a new solid oak staircase. We chose a plain stair runner with a umber leather border for a touch of rustic charm. The custom Marc Wood Studio chandelier spans the height of both floors, visually connecting the spaces and leading the eye up.

A Sanctuary of Style

The main bedroom is a private retreat where luxury meets functionality - a sequence of interconnected spaces, each flowing into the next. The headboard wall acts not only as a beautiful feature, finished with mural wallpaper from Woodchip & Magnolia, but is an integral part of the walk-in dressing room on the other side. Access is neatly concealed as a ‘secret door’ within a joinery panel, mirrored on the opposite side with another panel concealing book storage.

Beyond the dressing room is the main en-suite, a spacious room accessed through bespoke-made double pocket doors.

Enchanting Havens

The grandchildren’s bedrooms are a tale of two colour schemes, personalised with complementing accent colours. Central to each bedroom are the custom-built cabin beds, equipped with blackout curtains that can be drawn to create a private nook complete with mini reading light for bedtime stories.

The kids’ bathroom replicates the colour schemes from their bedrooms using playful kit-kat wall tiles. The concrete basin in sage green sitting on top of our custom-made curved-edged vanity unit is from Kast Concrete Basins.

Twin Suites

Our twin bedroom suites, designed for our clients’ grown-up children and their partners, were aptly nicknamed the Blue Suite and the Green Suite. Both bedrooms offer ample built-in storage and dressing tables, as well as nature-inspired feature wallpaper.

Tranquil En-Suites

The en-suite bathrooms of the Blue and Green suites were designed in matching colours. The vanity units were custom-made with fluted, grooved wooden fronts, a reference to the vertical lines used elsewhere in the house. The wall tiles are Claybrook Fellini, used in green and blue in their respective bathrooms. The hand-painted ceramic wall lights are by Mullan Lighting.

Inspired by Nature

At the heart of our design philosophy was the concept of creating a fluid transition between the external landscape and the interior spaces. Nature-inspired patterns and colours are woven throughout each space, each echoing the elements of the landscape - the greens of the leaves, the blues of the sky and the earthy tones of the soil. They mirror the changing seasons, ensuring that the farmhouse remains in sync with the world outside its walls.

In essence, the house is a celebration of nature and design, a sanctuary that respects and reflects the beauty of its environment, transcending trends and meant to be cherished for generations, creating a home that is not only beautiful but also soulful and sustainable.
